In 2009, town of Groton - where Geils moved in 1982 - named December 1 J. Geils Day. Both live albums - "Live" Full House and "Blow Your Face Out" - are considered timeless rock-blues classics that captured the band at the height of their craziest. In 2012, however, Geils officially quit the group and sued his bandmates for conspiring to go on tour without him and unlawfully using the band's trademarked name. "R.I.P Jay Geils", Wolf wrote. They scored a few Top 40 singles in the early Seventies, including "Give It to Me" and their cover of "Lookin' for a Love", an early Sixties tune by the Valentinos. Starting in 1999, the group reunited for a few reunion shows here and there before the relationship soured.
Wolf paid tribute to Geils following the news of his death on Tuesday night.
The J Geils Band has been nominated to but not entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
