The NBA revealed plans behind its first-ever awards show last November, and now the league has landed a host for the evening: Drake.

Drake himself had hinted at the appearance back in January on University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari's podcast.

Drake, 30, is officially your first-ever NBA Awards host, the league and Turner confirmed April 25! "I get to take the reigns on it", Drake said in the interview (h/t Slam's Ryne Nelson). Usually award shows sometimes are a bit restricted.

He did say that he's sad to not be on the small screen anymore. "I was very surprised how it all turned out", the host said. It is unclear if he will address what has happened over the last week. "I wish only the best for Fox News Channel".

Some of the hype around the MVP will likely have died down by June (if it hasn't already), but the idea of the award show as a pop culture event with a celebrity host could reignite public interest.

At the award show, the National Basketball Association will announce winners of the MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year awards. There will be six awards that the media will vote for. The NBA will announce All-NBA teams during the playoffs like previous years-a move created to give teams a better idea of their salary-cap room, given those awards' ties to player contracts. He also stands as the team ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, and can occasionally be spotted courtside at their home games.
