In a 53-page ruling, Pratt found that the state failed to prove that making women view their ultrasounds - let alone making them view it 18 hours before undergoing an abortion - made them rethink their decision to get an abortion. After so many assaults on freedom to choose this year, including OH banning abortions after 24 weeks, this is def a glimmer of hope for pro-choicers!
"These burdens are clearly undue when weighed against the nearly complete lack of evidence that the law furthers the State's asserted justifications of promoting fetal life and women's mental health outcomes", Pratt wrote in her 53-page ruling.
The president of Planned Parenthood of IN and Kentucky is praising a federal judge's ruling that blocks an IN mandate which forced women to undergo an ultrasound at least 18 hours before having an abortion. "There have been lots of states to take away Title X funding to Planned Parenthood, and the effects have been bad", Lynn said.
The new ultrasound mandate, combined with these two previously existing requirements, places an undue burden on a woman's right to choose to have an abortion and is therefore unconstitutional, according to the group's lawsuit. So it looks like the ultrasound doesn't make much of a difference after all!
In her ruling, Pratt struck down other features of the ultrasound legislation, including a ban on abortions due to fetal genetic abnormalities and a requirement that abortion providers bury or cremate aborted fetuses, provisions Pratt first halted in June.
A federal judge on Friday blocked a core provision of IN abortion legislation that Vice President Mike Pence lauded when he signed it into law "with a prayer" a year ago, the Associated Press reported Monday.
AS GOVERNOR of Indiana, Mike Pence introduced some of the strictest anti-abortion laws in America. Contrary to Kamm's assertion, the majority of Planned Parenthood's work (more than 90 percent nationally) centers on reproductive health care for women and men, including cervical and breast-cancer screening, testing for sexually transmitted infections and providing sexuality education for families, adults and teens.
Ralph Lauren to close flagship Polo store in Manhattan
Ralph Lauren's flagship store on the famed Fifth Avenue in New York City is closing. The company said the current restructuring will save $140 million per year.
Only four of those 17 centers offer abortion services, the group says, and the only providers of non-medically indicated abortion services in the state that are not affiliated with PPINK are located in Indianapolis, forcing women from rural areas to travel there to get an abortion.
Betty Cockrum, the CEO and president of Planned Parenthood of IN and Kentucky, praised Pratt's decision, calling it "an incredibly strong ruling" that protects IN women's right to an abortion from needless burdens.
"I'm hoping the state gives up and we agree that this become final, but I don't think that will happen", Falk said.
The financially rich Planned Parenthood could have solved the problem by installing sonogram equipment at its satellite centers.
IN is not the first state to impose such a restrictive abortion law.
The Indiana Attorney General's office was preparing a statement on the ruling, said spokesman Corey Elliot.
