Recently confirmed Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue weighed in Wednesday on President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on some Canadian timber in a dispute over USA milk.
Following the roundtable, President Trump signed an executive order that acknowledges a reliable, safe, and affordable food, fiber and forestry supply is critical to America's national security, stability and prosperity. Perdue was nominated for the post in January, but Senate action was held up while he made adjustments in his business holdings to comply with ethics requirements. Perdue won confirmation on a strong bipartisan vote of 87-to-11 on Monday.
Moore used the situation to underscore the importance of having key administration personnel such as Perdue in place, and called on the Senate to swiftly confirm Ambassador Robert Lighthizer as U.S. Trade Representative.
Perdue may be 70 years old, but he got a ringing endorsement from the National Young Farmers Coalition, the only national advocacy organization exclusively dedicated to supporting America's young farmers and ranchers. "Secretary Perdue's experience as an exporter and governor leading trade missions will be invaluable as this administration pursues trade policy".

Turkey crackdown: Has Erdogan gone too far? Ankara said it had informed the U.S. and Russian Federation before the strikes. The referendum bitterly divided Turkey.
The president talked about opening new markets for agricultural products as well as "need to be firm in how we deal with trade partners", he said.
Blake Hurst, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, the largest farm organization in Missouri, expressed relief that the approval process for Perdue is over.
"As secretary, I will champion the concerns of farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers, and will work tirelessly to solve the issues facing our farm families", Perdue said.
"He said that he understands how important it is for farmers to be viable in the marketplace and it was encouraging to hear him tell Secretary Perdue that, with respect to immigration enforcement, workers who are here and have not caused any problems, but have been productive workers, should not have anything to fear", Torrey told United Fresh. "I welcome the chance to work hand-in-hand with the secretary as we help producers navigate existing programs and as we look toward the 2018 farm bill". "The Agriculture Committee received many letters in support of his nomination, including support from six former US secretaries of agriculture representing both Republican and Democratic presidents and another from almost 700 organizations across the agriculture and food value chain".
