Sonic Mania, the revival of the 2D side-scrolling Sonic platforming games from the '90s, is set to be released August 15 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, publisher Sega announced today.
As evidenced in the latest clip, Sonic Mania will allow fans to "run, fly, climb (and glide, and punch, too)" while playing through completely updated classic levels and taking on all-new bosses. "Sonic Mania celebrates the best of Classic Sonic, pushing the envelope forward with stunning 60 FPS gameplay and pixel-perfect physics".

The new trailer is below, which features all new gameplay footage from Mania, as well as sketch and color animation, which you can expect to be finished once the final game rolls around in just a few months. Harness Sonic's new drop dash, Tails' flight, and Knuckles' climbing abilities to overcome the evil Dr. Eggman's robots. They can also play with others, thanks to cooperative and competitive modes. Sega has assembled a "supergroup" of developers for Sonic's most recent foray into the second dimension including Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games. It is unclear why Sonic Mania has been delayed so many times (it was originally set to release in early Spring).
SEGA has officially unveiled two important details about its upcoming 2D retro Sonic the Hedgehog game. Sonic Mania will be a great way to beat back the summer drought, that's for sure.
