Saturday night, a police offer shot at a vehicle full of teenagers while investigating a house party outside of Dallas, Texas, killing 15-year-old passenger Jordan Edwards.
Police initially said that the vehicle, in which Edwards was riding in the passenger seat, reversed "aggressively" at the approaching officers, but later retracted that statement and said that body camera video showed that the vehicle was driving away from officers when Oliver opened fire.
On Tuesday, the chief of the Balch Springs Police Department announced that he had fired the officer who used a rifle to shoot into a moving vehicle full of teenagers and killed Jordan Edwards, 15, as he was seated in the front passenger seat. "I acted on them", Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber told press yesterday (May 2).
Jackson says, for Edward's sake, they won't stop until there's an arrest and a conviction for that decision made back on Barron Drive.
Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Edwards family, said that Oliver fired three shots into the auto Edwards was in, based on eyewitness accounts from the other passengers in the vehicle. Edwards and the four people with him chose to leave what was becoming an unruly party as they heard gunfire and police were arriving, Merritt said, citing what witnesses had told lawyers.
Tim Tebow becomes the face of ESPN's layoff PR spin
Tebow's ESPN tenure dates back to 2013, when he was the first college football analyst tapped for SEC Network . The press release said Tebow's role with ESPN will not preclude him from continuing his baseball career.
The department immediately turned over its investigation into the incident to the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. While no criminal charges have been filed yet against Oliver, the District Attorney's office is now in the process of determining whether or not charges will be filed in the case. It took a few moments before the people inside in the auto noticed Edwards slumped over, she said.
By all accounts, Edwards was a well-liked and respected freshman at Mesquite High School, where he was an accomplished student and athlete. They couldn't tell if he was already dead.
Police responded by handcuffing the brother and detaining him overnight, even though they released him with no charges the following morning.
"We offer our honest condolences to Jordan's family and will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers as we move forward expeditiously, with a commitment to justice and transparency", District Attorney Faith Johnson's office said in a statement Monday.
"It did not meet our core values", Haber said of the shooting.
The family has asked activists to postpone demonstrations in the wake of Edwards' death as they make preparations for his funeral and spoke out against any violence perpetuated against police officers.
