The vice president also sought prayers for Rep. Steve Scalise and a Capitol Police officer who was shot Wednesday while defending Scalise and Republican colleagues from a shooter as they practiced for an annual charity baseball game Thursday night.
Scalise was sedated Friday, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.
Infection remains a considerable risk in the days and weeks during Scalise's extended hospital stay, Sava said.
Scalise was shot in the hip, and sustained grievous injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.
Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.
Scalise was among five people wounded when a shooter sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing on a diamond in Alexandria.
Zack Barth, an aide to Texas Rep. Roger Williams, was also shot but was treated and released from a hospital.
President Donald Trump said Friday that Steve Scalise "took a bullet for all of us".

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
Trump, who visited Scalise at the hospital on Wednesday, said the congressman was "in some trouble but he's going to be okay, we hope".
Trump posted on Twitter shortly before 9 a.m. that Scalise, "a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover".
A law enforcement official says the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several other people during an early morning baseball practice legally purchased his rifle and handgun.

Sue Hodgkinson says she saw no signs her husband was planning violence, didn't know what to say about it and wanted her family and neighbors left alone.
Hodgkinson has been in the area since March, living out of his van, said local FBI Special Agent In Charge Tim Slater.
Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place.
