Charles Schumer on Thursday joined a growing chorus of voices in Congress calling for a return to civility in the nation's politics after a gunman targeted congressmen at a GOP baseball practice.
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago", Sava said, suggesting that the Louisana Republican had faced an imminent risk of death when he arrived by helicopter at the facility after Wednesday's shooting.
"We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours", Sava said during a press conference at the hospital.

After resigning from his position, he reportedly went on to advise then-presidential candidate Donald Trump who defended Ailes. But if it did want to move gradually in that direction, dropping the disingenuous slogan isn't a bad way to start.
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said. Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.
Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter.
"You are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said. "And because of him, and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
He underwent surgery and received blood transfusions when initially transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in D.C. via Medevac, and will need additional operations. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
The president's meaning was unclear as he made the comments at an event on Cuba policy in Miami.
Aides to Ryan, R-Wis., confirmed the speaker had visited Scalise at the hospital but declined to provide details of the encounter.
The annual tradition of the game took on new significance after a gunman shot Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and four others at a Wednesday practice for the game in Alexandria, Va.
"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.
