TODAY is World Blood Donor Day, celebrating those who each year make more than 112m blood donations. The event is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marketed by World Health Organisation (WHO) along with World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day.
Blood is routinely transfused to patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients and trauma victims, according to the Red Cross. "The day to day reality is that we have patients who walk in with significant medical conditions, and who need blood just to maintain their health or their lives".
