Wojnarowski reported the move was a salary dump for Toronto, who would have owed Carroll $30 million over the next two seasons. Last year it was Tyler Johnson and Allen Crabbe of the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers and this year it was Otto Porter Jr of the Washington Wizards. However, sending C.J. Miles is worth the risk because they are simply trading a player that is leaving anyway. As in he has a plan for every stage of this massive rebuilding. However, the move was more of a financially-motivated decision for Toronto.
Carroll, who will turn 31 this month, is still considered a plus defender with his 6-foot-8, 212-pound frame and conscientious efforts. Ridding themselves of Carroll and the two years left on his contract were necessary moving forward. It'll be up to Kenny Atkinson - who should be very familiar with Carroll from his days with the Atlanta Hawks - to help the fading wing fly back to the player who served as an important piece on the playoff runs of the 2014-15 Hawks and 2015-16 Raptors.
Brooklyn now has one first round and two second-round selections in next year's draft. The deal won't be officially announced until the Nets' work out their salary-cap situation.
Afternoon storms this holiday weekend
Saturday will feature the conclusion of early showers and skies becoming partly to mostly sunny and very warm and humid. Partly sunny skies will wrap up the weekend on Sunday , along with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
A better use of owner Mikhail Prokhorov's funds would be the addition of a shooting big, an even rarer commodity than wings. Free agents can sign contracts at any time now that the NBA's moratorium period has ended.
He shot 45.2% from the field and 35.6% on three-pointers. Don't get me wrong: Toronto will miss Joseph's ability to credibly stretch the floor alongside Lowry as a league-average 3-point shooter. Miles will sign a three-year deal for around $25 million with a player option for the third year, according to Wojnarowski.
If all else fails, Marks can save the space for the trade deadline.
With the additions of Russell, Mozgov and Carroll, though, this has already been a more productive offseason for the retooling Nets.
