Siemian, a 2015 seventh-round draft pick out of Northwestern who won the starting job previous year when he beat out veteran Mark Sanchez, quickly surged ahead of Lynch, a first-rounder in 2016 from Memphis, when training camp opened.
Joseph had taken pains to split first-team reps between the quarterback contenders evenly throughout camp, and each got a start in the first two weeks of the preseason. Joseph said that game repetitions would carry more weight than practice work, and Siemian stood out the last two weeks, completing 14 of 18 passes for 144 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Siemian came off the bench and completed 8/11 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Siemian, who played most of last season with a left (non-throwing) shoulder injury that required surgery, finished 8-6 as a starter in 2016.
