Though the Punjab government too is being blamed for "mismanaging" the situation before and after the verdict against the dera head, chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday patted his government's back for faring better than the neighbouring Haryana.
The Army was on Thursday evening put on standby in Haryana and Punjab even as authorities ordered imposition of curfew in Sirsa town from 10 p.m. onwards, on the eve of a court verdict in a rape case against controversial self-styled godman Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh. "Not enough measures were taken into consideration to curb the situation", Singh said at a press conference.
"The other issue discussed was the ongoing encounter in Pulwama.two to four terrorists are still trapped", he said, adding that a house was also set ablaze.
Citing the data received from Haryana so far, Amarinder said 45 of the people injured in that violence were from Punjab and preparations have been made for cremation of the seven killed in the violence. On Saturday, the CM chose to duck questions on both him and Congress seeking dera support in previous elections and whether his party would distance itself from the dera now.
The tri-city area of Panchkula, Chandigarh and Mohali (in Punjab) were turned into a fortress, ahead of Friday's judgment by CBI special court judge Jagdeep Singh. This, and the fact that the entire Punjab police and the government was in the field yesterday, had ensured that things remained peaceful in the state, he added.
