STORM-IRMA

"Basically, Hurricane Irma is so strong and its pressure is so low, it's sucking water from its surroundings into the core of the storm", Fritz wrote.

Another Twitter user tweeted a photo of the exposed beach at a different beach in the Bahamas and showed it was back to normal within less than a day.

The Washington Post also adds that the jarring disappearance of the ocean could be attributed to hurricane "bulge", referring to the centre of the storm being so low pressure that water is actually drawn upwards.

While some have speculated the disappearing water could indicate an incoming tsunami, that's not the case here.

Meteorologists explain the incredible pressure from Hurricane Irma is pulling the water into the storm's center. It will probably be back by Sunday afternoon'. The Category 4 storm made landfall Sunday morning in Florida, where it is expected to move up the western coast of the state.
