The eurozone needs a minister of economy and finance, accountable to the European Parliament, to promote structural reforms, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Wednesday.
As the Union comes to terms with losing one of its biggest member states, Juncker called for EU leaders to meet in Romania the day after Britain leaves on March 29, 2019 to chart the bloc's way forward as 27 member states.
The state of the union address gives the Commission president a chance to outline the political objectives of the EU executive for the immediate future and announce new policies. "However, the European Parliament has made it clear that, whatever the outcome of the negotiations on the future European Union-United Kingdom relationship, they can not involve any trade-off between internal and external security, on the one hand, and the future economic relationship, on the other hand".
The UK government used an European Union tendering portal to find candidates for the design of the first British passport post-Brexit and, according to insiders who spoke to The Sunday Times, two of the shortlisted firms are French and German.
Lawmakers voted 601 to 69 in favour of the bill, part of a move to extend the exemption of worldwide flights from the EU's cap-and-trade system pending the adoption of last year's United Nations deal on tackling aircraft emissions. "All I can say is thank God we're leaving because you've learned nothing from Brexit".
European Union leaders insist the talks must first focus on Britain's withdrawal and that they rule whether "sufficient progress" has been made to move forward.
Intel's €1.06 billion antitrust fine to be revisited in European Union court
On remand, the General Court must consider Intel's argument about whether the rebates were capable of restricting competition. A spokesperson for Intel said: "We have always believed that our actions were lawful and did not harm competition".
He backs that argument by calling for all European Union states to adopt the euro and offering technical and financial help for countries that need it.
Following this week's vote, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has compiled a briefing on how Brexit might impact on the state pension for those United Kingdom citizens who are based in the EU.
Europe, he insisted, "is not a fortress and must never become one". "The wind is back in Europe's sails", he said. It was plain for all to see that our union was not in a good state.
Juncker wants to boost trade deals and finalize pending ones by the end of 2019, saying that countries around the world were "knocking at our door" for new agreements. Juncker also said talks should also begin with Australia and New Zealand.
The commission chief also reached out to central and eastern European member states amid concerns that differences on migration, rules for posted workers and democratic worries in Hungary and Poland are renewing an east-west divide within the bloc.
