Prosecutors said Mr Mesri had worked on behalf of Iran's military to attack military systems, nuclear software systems and Israeli infrastructure. At one point, prosecutors said, Mr Mesri bragged he had stolen 1.5 terabytes of data. Nevertheless, the attorney said, the indictment sent a message to Mr Mesri and all other hackers that "they are not safe behind the anonymity of computer screens".
It's unknown if HBO paid its hackers any money, but the stolen HBO files began leaking on July 30. Joon H. Kim, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of NY, announced on Tuesday (via TV Line) that Behzad Mesri has been charged with wire fraud, computer fraud, aggravated identity theft and interstate transmission of an extortionate communication over the allegations. "Beware of heart attacks".
At the current time Mesri is not in United States custody, according to U.S. officials. He also compromised e-mail accounts for various HBO employees.
Mesri, also known as "Skote Vahshat", stole episodes of HBO shows "Ballers", "Room 104" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm", as well as scripts for "Game of Thrones", and demanded almost $6 million in bitcoin currency in late July.
The FBI announced charges against the hacker behind leaking HBO episodes during the summer. HBO responded by offering a "bug bounty", a payment normally given to legitimate researchers who discover security vulnerabilities.
"As far as the criminal case is concerned, we prefer to leave any comments to the US Attorney's Office", he said.
Mr Kim described Mr Mesri as an "experienced and sophisticated hacker who has been wreaking havoc on computer systems around the world for some time".
He demanded up to $7.91 million in extortion emails to HBO staff to keep the data secret, some of which ended with photos of the Night King, a menacing zombie villain from Game of Thrones, according to the indictment. We don't want to endanger HBO's situation nor cause it to lose its reputation.
While it didn't dampen enthusiasm for everyone's favorite dragon-oriented political drama, HBO certainly wasn't happy when the major twists from the seventh season of its hottest show popped up online before they aired.
Trump issues first pardon
