Dasmunsi was heading the Indian football governing body at the time of his stroke in 2008, which led to Praful Patel taking over as president.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the death of Dasmunsi.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed condolences and remembered Dasmunsi as one of the tallest political activists in West Bengal. "His death is an irreparable loss to the Congress party and the country", Gandhi said. He was survived by his wife Deepa Dasmunsi and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi, who were at his bedside at the time of his demise. His contribution to Indian football, especially in starting the national league, was tremendous. The former Union minister had suffered a stroke in 2008 and was hospitalised since then.
Dasmunsi served Congress party for nearly five decades. Later, he was shifted to his home.
The stroke left Dasmunsi paralysed and unable to speak as blood supply to a part of his brain was cut off, causing irreversible damage.

He was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce in 1985.
Dasmunsi was MP from Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal.
Dasmunsi first became the AIFF President in 1989, succeeding K Ziauddin, and held the position for 19 years.
He was the cabinet minister in Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the first term of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
An astute orator and and a key leader of the Congress in West Bengal as well as at the national level, Dasmunsi rose from the rank of a Youth Congress worker, who became All India Youth Congress President in 1970. "Otherwise, he could have done more in his political life", she added.
