Some medical reports suggest it might only be 10 percent effective.

In the United States last season, overall vaccine effectiveness against all circulating flu viruses was 39 percent and the effectiveness was only a bit lower, 32 percent, against H3N2 viruses.

The latest data is from the week ending in December 2nd, though new data is expected out soon.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit announced in mid-November that the flu had arrived for the season, after a laboratory confirmed that an Owen Sound resident had tested positive for Influenza A.

"This is a result of patients seeking health care for flu-like symptoms and means an increased demand on health care resources and longer wait times", said Carly Baxter, Communications Consultant with QHC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts studies each year to determine how effective the vaccine will be in protecting against influenza-related illness and while the effectiveness can vary from year to year, studies show that the vaccine remains the most effective way to protect public health.

"These findings remind us of the seriousness of flu and that flu prevention should really be a global priority", said Dr Joe Bresee, associate director for global health at the CDC's Influenza Division and a co-author of the study.

Other big stars like Carolina Panther Graham Gano, Lebron James, Justin Beiber, and Katie Perry later shared their support. In his video, through his tears, Keaton told viewers: "If you are made fun of, just don't let it bother you".

Flu-related deaths worldwide are increasing according to the latest estimate from the CDC and its global health partners.

More information on fighting the flu can be found here. Common symptoms include cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, fever and chills, muscle and body aches, headaches and fatigue.

"We still have flu vaccine available, so if you haven't already, now is the time to get your flu vaccination".

However, as Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics, pointed out, the flu has potentially serious complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis and sinus and ear infections. Residents 18 and older can often get a flu vaccine at a local pharmacy.

More than a quarter of pregnant women reported that medical staff did not recommend or offer a flu shot.

So far, officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health say that four people have died from the virus since September. So mention this to your doctor when you go for your vaccine!

That's the message from the Grey Bruce health unit, which is monitoring a rise in influenza cases this month.
