This holiday season, customers bought more than twice as many Amazon Fire TV Sticks than they did during last year's holiday season. More than 4 million started a Prime trial or paid membership in just one hectic week of holiday shopping. Prime ($99 per year in the U.S.) offers free shipping on millions of items, as well as access to Prime Video and Prime Music and other perks.
Amazon on Tuesday said it recorded its "biggest holiday season".
Amazon's official statement regarding the matter reads,"Echo Show and FireTV now display a standard web view of YouTube.com and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website". Predictably, Amazon didn't release any specific sales figures, only noting that Echo Dot sales ranged in the millions.
Flu-related deaths higher than previously reported
So far, officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health say that four people have died from the virus since September. Flu-related deaths worldwide are increasing according to the latest estimate from the CDC and its global health partners.
The company's popular product, Amazon Alexa, which is a voice-based assistant software behind Amazon Echo, was the most downloaded app on Christmas Day in both Apple Store and Google Play, two virtual stores for the iOS and Android mobile operating systems.
More than one billion items were ordered from small businesses and entrepreneurs this season, according to Amazon, with 140 million ordered over the five-day period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. "Thank you to the millions of customers and hundreds of thousands of Amazon employees all around the world who made this holiday better than ever before". Exact numbers haven't been given, but Amazon does say that the Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick were the best-selling products from any manufacturer in any category across all of Amazon. The company's much-touted Alexa was used much more this holiday season for a variety of tasks. Its peak day of customer fulfillment was December 19, 2017.
Shopping on Amazon's mobile app also saw 70 percent growth, representing increasing consumer familiarity with shopping from mobile devices.
